Have you ever been afraid to sit down on a classroom carpet? I have one of those carpets in my kindergarten classroom. My students would love to lay down to read a book or put a puzzle together, but I am cautious in allowing them to get to close to the carpet.
My students are five and six year old students that are active and love learning new things.
This is their first experience in school. The students love to read and draw. They get excited when they learn a new word or a new number. We are at a Title 1 school with 89% of the children receiving free or reduced lunches. The school is in a low-income neighborhood. Many of the children come from single parent families with multiple children. The families having a hard time making ends meet and the children often go without basic necessities.
My Project
Our whole group instruction time would be managed more easily with a colorful carpet where everyone has a place. The picture on the carpet matches our "Jungle" class decor and would provide the children with their own place to sit each day during story time. The children would be able to lay down on the carpet without the fear of laying on an old stain or odor from years past. The classroom carpet that is in my classroom is almost eight years old. It is worn, stained, and unsanitary even with its yearly cleaning. I know what has made the stains and created to odors that will not go away. That is why I cannot let my children put their faces near it. My children will have the freedom to lay down to read a book or work on a puzzle. Thank you for your support!
Your donations to this project could help in so many ways!
My students this year and for many years to follow will have the opportunity to sit on our classroom carpet without wondering what they are being exposed to...and it would certainly give this kindergarten teacher more peace of mind! Please help us get a new carpet for our classroom!
