This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in the inner city. 70% of the students at my school qualify for free lunch. Many of my students come single parent homes and reading material at home is limited. Most of them are exposed only to what I read to them in school and what is in the classroom library.
My reading and writing curriculum has specific books that are used to teach particular topics. The classroom library does not have the majority of these books. It is difficult, if not impossible to teach lessons without these books. Often, I go to the public library and borrow the necessary books. Sometimes the public library has the book lent out already. Other times, the book is just not available at all. In addition, I do not let the children hold the books from the library at their desks, because I've had to pay for missing books in the past. If the books are part of our classroom library, the students can re-read the books individually or in pairs.
I need the books "Knuffle Bunny", "Knuffle Bunny, Too", "Diary of a Spider" (on cd!), "Diary of a Worm", "The Cat in the Hat", and "St. Patrick's Day" by Gail Gibbons (non-fiction text) and "Growing Frogs". These books will represent various genres to my students, that will be used to teach very specific skills to my students. Two of the books are on cd which is a big treat for my class. We can listen to the book as a whole class, or students can listen with headphones at the listening center.
Your generosity will allow my students to read books necessary for the success of the reading and writing curriculum. These books can be re-read by the children in class. I will also allow them to "check" these books out of the classroom library to read with their families at home. They will not have this opportunity without your support. You will make it possible for my students to learn to love to read!
