My students need cross-stitch kits to continue to practice sewing and get more comfortable with their stitching skills.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty south side Chicago school, I witness my students being faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they are eager to learn, focused on their education, and driven to be accepted and successful in college.

This year I am starting a Family and Consumer Science Course with little to no budget.

This is the first time an elective has been an option for students to pick in a long time at my school. As a school that focuses on getting 100% of our students accepted into college, I believe it is also important for them to know life skills like finance, sewing, crocheting, design, and how to cook when they achieve that goal of going to college.

My Project

My students have been focusing on nutrition and learning about the food service industry. We have cooked an item each Friday and will continue to do so throughout the year. We need more cleaning supplies to help with cleaning our dishes when we are done cooking and this project will help provide some of those necessities. Many are excited and eager to move to our next unit of sewing! They are already buying stuffed animal kits and socks for sock monkeys to make after we learn the basics of hand sewing.

This project will also provide a fun way to practice cross-stitching as well as to learn another facet of hand sewing.

After picking from the various designs they will be able to create a pattern and take it home! It is important to me for the students in my class to enjoy what we are doing, learn something new, and continue to use what they learn when class is over.
