Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group that is driven, dedicated, and above all else hard-working. These students understand that in order to succeed in debate, there is a high level of demand of their time, dedication, and effort both during and after school.
Our school is a Title I campus, meaning more than half the students receive free or reduced lunch.
The poverty rate is high in the surrounding area, but our students are a strong group of outstanding kids who do not allow any circumstance to hold them back. Over the past school years our campus has been directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Imelda. Despite these terrible storms, my students were able to pull together, overcome adversity, and have successful debate seasons!
Despite our year being cut short due to COVID-19, the team saw major success. One student advanced to finals at state, a team of novices advanced to state as the district champions, another student advanced to the nationals as an alternate in two events, and another student advanced to nationals to compete in June! In an effort to meet the needs of a growing team I am seeking assistance for the Speech and Debate program!
My Project
The past few school years our school has been affected by significant and unprecedented events: Hurricane Harvey, Tropical Storm Imelda, and COVID-19. However, my students are resilient and do not let these types of events stand in their way of achieving their goals. Our school is the center of the community for our area. Both the school and community have been greatly impacted by these past and current events. Through support and joint efforts, both have done a phenomenal job overcoming unexpected adversity this year and is still making strides in recovery. It is my job, as a teacher and coach, to ensure that students are set up for success through my guidance and equipped with all materials to better set them up for success.
Each item gives my students the resources and tools they need to present themselves in a professional manner and provides them with the tools they need for success.
Speech and Debate is more than arguing, it is a competition that teaches students how to critically think, adapt to academic situations, developing social skills, as well as developing a skill set that will allow them to be successful in their educational and professional careers.
This project will not only help continue building an established program, one that has sent students to state and national level in the past two years but also helps us create the foundation for future students to achieve success by eliminating the burden of finding the basics for competition. The laptop bags are used for students to carry their research binders, storage containers help students maintain organization of their competition materials, the earphones are for national virtual tournaments, and the office supplies all help better prepare the team for a successful season.
