Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding," William Paul Thurston once said and I agree. Please help my students understand math concepts by reading a variety of math related books.

I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners.

I work with students with autism, students with specific learning disabilities, speech and language impairments, and students who may benefit from small group interventions. Close to 90% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and about 60% of our students are English language learners.

My Project

I believe reading high quality literature math picture books will help my students become better mathematicians. The mathematical problems and solutions that my students will encounter in picture books are deeper and more nuanced than most of the word problems they encounter. I will use Growing Patterns book to help them see nature through new eyes, in daisies, pine cones, leaf patterns, & seashells. Using the Seeing Symmetry book, I will be able to show them different types of symmetry and show them how to make their own symmetrical masterpieces. The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in content areas. My students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they have read. This stresses critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.

Please help my students by contributing to 30 math related books to have a better understand of math concepts and to explore hands-on math learning.

These resources will help my students have a better understanding of problem solving. These skills are important for my students to become higher level thinkers.
