We Have Brains In Our Heads & Feet In Our Shoes, But...

My students need a new carpet, pencil sharpener and pencils.

My Students

As Dr. Seuss said, we have "brains in our heads, and feet in our shoes," but unfortunately no classroom carpet to sit on during read-alouds and mini-lessons! We also are in desperate need of a pencil sharpener.

My fantastic third graders and I returned from winter break to discover that our classroom rug had to be thrown away due to a leaky radiator.

Our school can't afford to buy a new one! I have had the privilege of teaching this wonderful group of hard-working, kind, spirited, intelligent third graders since they started second grade. They have grown enormously in the past year and a half, against all odds. Unfortunately, my kids are growing up in an environment that is poisoned by low-expectations and limited opportunities. Many of the grown-ups in my kids' lives don't believe that my kids can overcome the obstacles they face. But I know better! Our big goal is for every student in our class to earn a 3 or a 4 on the 3rd grade ELA and Math state tests in the spring. We can do it, but we need your support!

My Project

This beautiful new classroom rug will allow my kids a clean, comfy place to sit during read-alouds, mini-lessons, community meetings, and independent reading time. We're learning about the seven continents as part of our social studies curriculum this year, and having a giant map as our carpet will help support my students' understanding of world geography. Right now, we're studying the continent of Africa, and doing a case-study of Nigeria. How cool will it be for my kids to actually stand on our new carpet and pinpoint exactly where Nigeria is?!! Having our own quiet, speedy pencil sharpener will help us maximize our learning time. Right now, I have to send students to the office every time they need to sharpen a pencil! When we have our own, we can share with the other third grade classrooms in our hallway. We also need pencils to write with.

I am convinced of each and every one of my students' ability to succeed, despite what the statistics say.

Your support will demonstrate that you believe in them too! Your generosity will not only provide the resources necessary to make our classroom more comfortable, efficient, and conducive to learning, but will also bolster my kids' confidence and determination! Thank you!
