"Could you ever imagine losing a part of your personality? That is what happened to me when I moved to the United States". When I read these two lines from one of my students' personal narratives, I knew right away that I wanted to get their stories published.
Most of my students are recent immigrants to the United States who are learning English as their second or third language.
My students speak Spanish, Somali, Amharic, and Ewe at home, and they are learning English at school. They come to school with different life experiences, but they are all very eager to learn no matter how difficult it is for them to learn in a language they haven't yet mastered. My students are enthusiastic and curious ninth graders who want to learn and be engaged and challenged on a daily basis!
My Project
I am requesting a copy of our class book of personal narratives for each of my students. My students are writing personal stories about leaving their home countries and moving to the United States. Their stories are powerful. They are touching. They are reflective. They are something my students will never forget. They are a way for my students to share their experiences and feelings while also learning how to write in English. We're publishing a class hard cover book with these stories, but most of my students can't afford to buy a copy of it. I believe that by getting a copy of the class book of stories, my students will be able to relate to each other better, which will also help me to build a stronger classroom community. Finally, these books will give my students a sense of pride and accomplishment - it will be their first published work in English that they'll get to keep for ever!
Please support my students by helping them to get a copy of our class book with their personal stories.
These books will be a lifetime keepsake for my students, and they will enhance my students' educational experience.
