My Students

Creativity brings happiness and contentment for many individuals. My students are no different than other students, and are extremely energized by art and the creative process that flows from their individual minds. At our school, we have three classrooms of first through fifth grade students with severe disabilities, including intellectual, developmental, mental, physical and Autism Spectrum Disorders. These students have to work hard to stay on top of their daily work and desperately need an outlet like art to help regulate their emotions and behavior.

The students in these classrooms are a truly fun and, at the same time, challenging group of humans.

I am grateful to have the opportunity, as Team Leader, to work with these students and their parents every day that I teach and work. Their individual needs, of which there are many, require that I stay on top of ways to motivate and engage their minds. Art supplies will help us accomplish this goal of continued learning.

My Project

I am the Team Leader over three classrooms of students with special needs (thus, the "special" part in the title of the project). Many students with special needs enjoy and need a creative outlet to their day. Even during academic time, colors and mixed media can help a child with special needs stay focused and retain information. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and what we learned from it, students will need their own, individual art supplies to carry with them at all times. In order to continue keeping students safe, they will not be allowed to share supplies during art or academic time. Our supplies from previous years are worn, in need of replacement and covered in the germs of previous students.

Supplies that are needed are washable markers, crayons, colored pencils, dry erase markers, glue sticks, dot paints, and pencil sharpeners.

These supplies will be contained in individual washable cases for each student to have at his or her desk and to carry to center activities or art classes.
