We Have A Dream

My students need listening center books for African American History Month.

My Students

Remember what it was like when your mother read you a book before tucking you into bed. A lot of my students don't have this luxury. Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. I want this to be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books.

My students are a loving, hard-working group of EL kindergarteners at a Title One school in Nashville, TN.

About 65% of my class are English Language Learners the other 35% are from low economic families and they are working hard to be independent readers by the end of the school year. I am proud to be part of a Title One school that serves primarily low-income families. I feel a need and desire to teach and help these wonderful students.

My Project

I am asking for four different multicultural books to use in my listening center for African American History Month. When my students go to the listening center they have to do more than just listen to a story. After they have heard the story they then do a thinking map on the setting, characters, plot, favorite part. Later in the week when they return to the listening center they re-listen to the story and they take their thinking map and create their own writing piece about what they have heard and how they feel about the story. I feel that it is extremely important to incorporate reading and writing together to become life long learners.

Your donation to We Have a Dream will allow my wonderful group of students to hear four fabulous stories about inspiring African Americans.

It will allow them to expand on their writing skills and see how time has changed throughout history. Your donation will help inspire not only these young students but future students I will help teach and help inspire.
