My Students

My students are bright, energetic inner-city children that deserve the same educational opportunities that students in suburban districts that surround Philadelphia experience.

Unfortunately, due to the budget crisis our district currently struggles to provide the bare necessities to the children at greatest risk. Our children live in an impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhood known throughout Philadelphia for drug activity and gang violence. Our rather large K-4 school has often been referred to as an “oasis” for the children in the neighborhood. A place where the children are safe, loved, and most importantly educated. With the budget crisis we face, our 824 students have been subjected to larger classroom size, cuts in personnel, including the school librarian, and essential support materials in every core subject.

My Project

We do not have a literacy curriculum that meets the requirements of the Common Core or state testing, so with these class sets of chapter books, I will be able to plan lessons that meet these requirements, while my students become introduced to classic books. In addition, the iPads will allow me to design intervention, as well as reinforcement activities to address individual student needs.

If this project is funded it will improve the learning in my classroom because reading will be fun and meaningful.

I know my students will love these new chapter books and iPads because they will enjoy what they are reading and learn the necessary skills to become successful readers!
