In preparation for 5th grade, my students want to finish the school year with a challenging and exciting text. After reading "The Hunger Game" series, I knew this would be a fantastic way to end their 4th grade school year!
My students and I live in a large city of Georgia with a high poverty rate.
Our school is Title 1 (high needs), serving a large population of students living in transitional housing (shelters). Like many school districts, ours is in an extreme financial crisis and we lack many resources we need to prepare our children for their next level of education. Although we face these challenges on a daily basis, I continually try to afford my students with access to QUALITY and ENGAGING reading material; better preparing them for the rigor they will face in middle school and high school. They are all eager to learn and I believe this novel will give some of my more apprehensive students deep interest in reading more actively.
My Project
Although we are in a public school system facing economic hardships, we are always trying to "prepare our students to change the world". Most of the time I can get creative with what I've got, to make my ideas work, but it is often difficult to get quality classroom set of novels. With the nation transitioning to the Common Core standards, it is vital that all students are receiving quality reading instruction, while also meeting their needs to keep them engaged, and instilling a LOVE for reading. Receiving this class set of books will be an instrumental learning tool in the classroom. Students need to have access to the text; after all, we teach that good readers often refer back to the text. I believe that reading this book will inspire students to read more of the series, in turn fostering a deeper love and understanding for what it means to be a "reader", all while improving their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
I teach my students that although you may not "have" a lot, it is always good to give back.
At 10 years old it is hard for them to grasp that giving can come in many forms, especially when in their short lives the world hasn't seem to give much to them. But, they are optimistic and eager learners! I think that this project will be a great way for them to conceptualize that people who do not even know them, believe in their capabilities and want to help. Thank You!
