"Students will read if we give them the books, the time, and the enthusiastic encouragement to do so. " -Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer
I teach a vibrant group of fifth graders in Northern Virginia who enjoy reading but aren't avid readers.
I want to ignite the reader within by providing them with what I remember as "great classics" that will have them begging to stay awake a little longer just to finish their book.
My Project
I am an avid book reader and have always been! This year, I have been inspired by a book called "The Book Whisperer," and I have challenged my students to a 40 book challenge, which I am also going to complete. We spend each morning having silent reading time for 30-45 minutes, and it has already been life changing for my students. My students are actually upset when I tell them to come to a stopping point. Many students, who are reluctant readers, are now finding more enjoyment in reading as well. We spend time talking about book recommendations, and they are piling up books on the corner of their desks just waiting to start their next book.
Many of my students have the opportunity to go to the library, but we just don't have enough books in the classroom.
I need to provide more books for them so they have the books available for them but also meet their interests.
