My Students

My students are so excited to learn that they are finding it difficult to sit still!

I teach an energetic group of 4th and 5th grade special education students in a high poverty area on Chicago's south side.

My students have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. Many of my students demonstrate particular difficulties translating their energy into sustained attention. They are so eager to learn that they often have difficulty sitting still. Many of my students fidget, chew on pencils and shift their attention as a way of releasing their hyperactivity.

My Project

My students would benefit greatly from the addition of fidgets, seat cushions and increased visual organization of material with a pocket chart. These additions would allow them to remain seated and on task while still being able to release their hyperactivity. These additions would allow them to be able to cope with their impulsivity in a positive manner. They would allow my students to remain on task and fully participate in class.

These supplies would allow my special education students the accommodations they need to be able to fully participate in the learning environment.

My students' individual needs will be met while simultaneously making it easier for them to meet school wide expectations. They will be better able to maintain attention and participate in instruction. These supplies will be another way to show my students that although they may need some extra help, they are capable of learning anything.
