Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a north Bronx Middle School in the Bronx, New York. My class is a sixth grade special education class in a small community school in a high-need community. My school is a new school and is therefor still struggling to build up a strong foundation of materials including classroom libraries.
This year my school expanded from a sixth grade to a sixth and seventh grade. When the move occurred, furniture and books were supposed to be left behind for our new sixth graders. When I moved into my classroom, however, there was only one book shelf and a few boxes of books. Excitedly, I started to fly through the boxes of books. There were so many great titles, however, most of them were written on the sixth grade level. Though I teach sixth grade, many of my students are reading far below reading level. Despite their difficulty with reading, many of my students love to read, however, the books that we have in our classroom are too difficult for them. They therefore get easily frustrated and discouraged when they are reading.
Older students who struggle in reading are often faced with the disheartening reality that most books they are able to read and understand are written for less mature interests and intellect. For this reason, I thoroughly searched for high interest books for my students. I have found many graphic novels and high interest, low level books such as the Geronimo Stilton Series, Nancy Drew series, and Captain Underpants graphic novels that I would love to have in my library, however, my school does not have the means to supplement our existing classroom library.Your help will ensure that my students not only have books they are able to read in our library, it will also help to empower them by giving them the tools with which to boost their confidence and therefor maximize their effectiveness as positive community members.
