This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help our listening center! I teach fourth grade in a high needs school. I am a general education teacher but many of my students also receive special education services to keep them up to the pace of the regular classroom.

Many of the students in my class are very low in reading comprehension. As the school year has progressed, I began to notice that many of my students do better when they hear a story, rather then when they read the story themselves. Just reading the words on the page provides a challenge for the students. They are trying to figure out what the words are rather then actually comprehending what they are reading.

With this in mind, I have been unable to fully provide the services that the children need, like having a fully functioning listening center. Our listening center is unfortunately NOT workable. We only have bits and pieces. There are three compact disc players with headphones to listen to audiobooks, but there are no tapes/audiobooks for the students to enjoy. The listening center also has an eight headphone jack so that many students can listen to an audiobook at one time. But the headphones that are in the listening center do not fit in the jacks. Many of the components of the listening center are there but it is lacking the main components to get the listening center up and running.

Your help will really make a difference to my students. By helping with this project, you will allow the students to increase their reading comprehension. The students will be able to enjoy reading because they will not become frustrated with the words that are on the page. Instead the students can follow along with the text and actually learn new words to expand their vocabulary. The audiobooks will also help the students fluency. The audiobooks will demonstrate how the students are supposed to read the words when they are written in a sentence. With your help, you will make it possible for my students to regain the love of reading that is necessary for them to become successful.
