My Students
Think of the last thing you read- it was probably from a newspaper or a magazine. In my classroom we are lucky to have a wide variety of novels (thanks to donors choose), but we are lacking interesting non-fiction written for middle school students!
My 8th grade students are curious, determined, and thirsty for more information.
They attend a DC Public School that is 99% free and reduced lunch and very few of them have access to any type of literature outside of my English classroom. While we have collectively read 48 books this year, we have not had a chance to get into non fiction reading.
My Project
Providing my students with their own subscription to Time For Kids will hook them into nonfiction and provide them with highly engaging reading! Having their own subscription will allow my students to increase the amount of time they spend reading outside of the classroom- whether that is on the metro, the bus or at their home. The stories in the Time For Kids magazine will be relevant and targeted to my student's age group.
This donation will allow my students to reach our big goal- which is to be the highest achieving middle school students in the District of Columbia.
We are well on our way to creating a reading rich classroom, but we need your help to support us in loving informational text. Please help us create a passion for reading!
