We Can't Breathe!

Help me give my students an air purifier, filters, N95 respirator masks, a lantern and batteries to be prepared for emergencies.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten at an urban elementary school in a low-income/high poverty school district. It is an exceptionally diverse student body- racially, culturally, and socio-economically. Many of our students speak languages other than English. The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. My students come to school with diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages, and families.

My students love to learn!

Our school community embraces this diversity and honors all children. Despite a variety of challenges our students may face, one common thread among them is their complete excitement for learning and engaging in school activities. The students are eager to be at school and are proud of their academic and social successes.

My Project

The last 2 years in Northern California we have had some devastating wildfires. My school is not so close that we have been in imminent danger, but we are close enough that we have had several days where the air quality is so poor and dangerous that the students are not allowed to leave the school building.

They are expected to still be able to focus on learning, when the air reeks of smoke and causes our eyes and lungs to burn.

Air purifiers and N95 respirator masks would help them tremendously in these situations.

We have also had several power outages, and there is no outside light in our bathroom. The students are scared to use the bathroom in the pitch black. I am asking for a lantern and batteries so that they can have a little more peace of mind in these situations.
