Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember the first time you held and pet an animal as a child? That feeling of awe at the reaction from a living thing is what drives my young learners to learn more about them. In addition to turtles and walking sticks, my preschoolers are fascinated with birds, mammals, and other reptiles.
My preschoolers come from a variety of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds.
Last year, nothing could top their enthusiasm as trained animal experts brought in a macaw, a tortoise, and other animals to interact with. Their eyes lit up, and the shyest of students became engaged and asked questions of the animal experts.
Not only does such a visit teach my students differences and similarities between animals, it instructs them in animal care and fosters compassion for living things.
My Project
This project is to bring Petland Traveling Pets to our school. Having animal experts as a resource with live specimens to refer to builds interest and makes students active learners in hands-on activities.
My atudents will build their background knowledge as emergent readers, having a reference point such as, "Macaws are brightly-colored birds with strong beaks." Nothing makes as big an impression on young learners as firsthand experiences, such as touching a chinchilla and describing its fur for the first time.
Studies have shown that the more hands-on experiences young learners have during early childhood, the better their foundation for learning across disciplines.
What better immersion is there than having live animals visit the classroom, with experts to answer their many questions?
