Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My preschoolers come from a variety of ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. They live in the heart of a busy city, and animal interactions are limited. They are eager learners who learn best through first-hand experiences.
Last year, nothing could top their enthusiasm as trained animal experts brought in a macaw, a tortoise, and other animals to interact with.
Their eyes lit up, and the shyest of students became engaged and asked questions of the animal experts. They even got to pose for pictures to have add to the memory.
My Project
What better immersion is there than having live animals visit the classroom, with experts to answer their many questions? Not only does such a visit teach my students differences and similarities between animals, it instructs them in animal care and fosters compassion for living things. Having animal experts as a resource with live specimens to refer to builds interest and makes students active learners in hands-on activities.
My students will build their background knowledge as emergent readers, having a reference point such as, "Macaws are brightly-colored birds with strong beaks." Studies have shown that the more hands-on experiences young learners have during early childhood, the better their foundation for learning across disciplines.
