This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine burgeoning writers being able to share class writing instantly, without costly photocopies and transparancies. Imagine their smiles when their papers are whisked off to be showcased in front of peers as examples of powerful writing. A document camera will allow this dream to be realized.

My Project

Our delicate, street-hardened, hilarious, sometimes tragic, always wonderful kids are at school from 7:15-4:15 and occasionally on Saturdays. Many have IEP's, learning differences, and/or speak minimal English. Nevertheless, they, along with their families, realize that excuses don't get you into college.

Though our kids generally begin 5th grade far below grade level, many matriculate into top private, day and boarding schools as well as place in the top 90th percentile on standardized tests.

However, what distinguishes them most from other students I've taught is their genuine love of learning.

They are not grade-grubbers or teacher's pets; rather, they are truly interested in reading about, and especially discussing, unfamiliar cultures and bygone epochs. Whether it's the far-out fiction of Kurt Vonnegut or T.C. Boyle, or the rigorous cranial demands of Plato's "Allegory of the Den", my kids accept and crave any literary challenge thrown their way.
