I love the sound a student makes when they understand a new math concept! "oooooohhhhhh, THAT'S how you do it!" My students need to see examples clearly demonstrated, step by step. A new overheard projector will help students to see examples.
I teach math to middle school students at a small, rural school in Northern California.
My students enjoy sports, their community, and the pride they feel when achieving academic success. Our school's budget has been reduced in recent years, and is facing greater reductions this year. These cuts are affecting my classroom.
My Project
I need an overhead projector. My students write in their math notebooks every day, beginning with notes I create on the overhead as we read, and adding their own thoughts to help them remember how to navigate formulas and procedures. My students are successful when they are engaged, when we are able to have conversations about the math concepts I am presenting. They love having the opportunity to come up and share a written example in front of the class, but with the cracked glass on my current overhead, it is not safe for students to do this. The projector we use daily is blurry and the glass is cracked. Students frequently tell me the images are blurred or that the cracked glass is obscuring what I've written. My class benefits from only 1/2 of the overhead because of distortions and cracks. A new overhead will allow my students clearly see all the examples I write, but will also allow them to share their understanding with their fellow students.
A new overhead projector will benefit my students by increasing and opening up new avenues of participation.
Engaging a student is the first step to increasing understanding. My students work hard to understand math. They should not struggle to read the overhead. This simple solution will make a world of difference for them!
