I am a first grade teacher in a high-need community. I also participate in an intervention program for students who are having difficulty learning to read.
Many of my students have difficulty learning to read using traditional measures and require a lot of intervention. Interactive actives which involve students more readily in the learning process and challenge them to think critically will ensure that my students are successful in learning to read successfully.
This project requires resources that allow students to take ownership of their learning, such as materials to set up listening centers that contain books with predictable and rhythmic text, learning centers that challenge students to practice blending and decoding, as well as materials which will help students increase fluency scores through practice.
Remember when you realized that you could read? That feeling of exhilaration you got from realizing that all those alphabets strung together were actual words. The same words that you had heard in stories that were read to you. Remember the epiphany of learning that you no longer had to beg your parents to read you your favorite story again. You could read it by yourself, any time you wanted.
I want to ensure that my students are able to have there own reading epiphanies. I want them to experience the same joys we felt when we read our first book on our own. Your support will help them realize that knowing how to read opens the door to learning and that if they can learn to read, they can learn to do anything through reading.
