Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fun loving bunch of middle school students Language Arts and SEL (social and emotional learning). Most of my students are bilingual and all receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Many of my students have difficult home lives and lack the foundational skills needed to be successful readers, yet they strive to overcome these challenges.
We are located in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest side of Chicago which is home to a large Mexican-American community.
We are a classroom community of learners where I have high expectations for my students and want to see them reach their full potential. They are full of heart, energy and a desire to learn. In my classroom I try to instill a love of learning and build a community atmosphere to provide the best foundation possible for my students' educational needs.
My Project
Students in my classroom come from a mix of backgrounds and reading levels. Most of my students can read and write in English AND in Spanish- AMAZING, right?! However, this wonderful skill is being lost by so many of my students due to a lack of higher level Spanish texts within my classroom.
The texts selected are of varying levels and genres to provide each student in my class the opportunity to read a Spanish text and continue to build on their native language skills and vocabulary.
I also have a handful of students who are newcomers to the United States and only speak Spanish and I would love to provide more options for these students as well.
