My Students

I have 32 wonderful and bright students. They are all eager to learn many things in kindergarten. As a new teacher, I am motivated to bring new and exciting ideas into the classroom. I teach low-income students in a Chicago neighborhood. My school is awesome; unfortunately, it lacks the necessary funding that is greatly needed. The principal and the staff are great to work with. We all help each other in order to benefit student learning which is most important to me as an educator. Without funding, the students are not given supplies needed to complete the school year.

I teach ESL students reading, math, writing, social studies, and science.

My students love participating in centers for reading and math, but I would love to incorporate a writing center filled with the right materials.

My Project

For most children, before they learn how to walk, they must learn how to crawl. It's an important developmental step which few children skip. The same adage is true for many other things in life, especially in the education of a young child. Though there are several different theories on and methods for learning how to speak and understand the English language, phonics-based systems perhaps best embrace this one-step-at-a-time methodology.

Reading is such a complex process that an estimated 10 million children struggle with learning to read.

The good news is that most of these children, given the proper instruction under the five components of reading, will progress out and become strong and avid readers. One component, proven to have a severe impact on reading success, is phonics.

This phonics set will help my kindergarten students start reading at their own reading level. The engaging match-ups, CVC words, vowel sounds, and blends and digraphs are just what my kindergarten students need to help them learn to read. Kids just select a word card and touch the textured dots as they say each sound. Then they read the full word and find its matching picture card! With your donation, my students will get 3 phonics sets with 60 textured word cards, 60 picture cards, 6 storage pockets and 6 answer cards. The letter tiles will help my students build word after word and explore everything from spelling patterns and word families to decoding! The set includes 20 vinyl pouches, each with 48 double-sided letter tiles with uppercase on the front and lowercase on back. The consonants and vowels are color-coded so it’s easy to build and sound out words. The 20 pouches include a total of 960 letter tiles, perfect for my whole classroom!
