My Students
Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100 percent of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.
My Project
Robert Levin stated "Too often we give children answers to remember, rather than problems to be solved" . This project is about helping students learn to solve problems and use technology in a motivational way.
Educators often view video games in a negative way, instead of using them to truly motivate students.
Todays students have been raised on video games. They are deeply interested in them. Instead of trying to compete with this, we can harness this interest.
My project involves student teams using Ozobots to create their own game.
Students will progress through the OzoBlocky online games which teach the coding fundamentals in a game environment. After the complete the lessons, they will then be ready to create their own game using OzoBlocky. They can also use the Ozobots to follow the commands in the games as they learn and when they develop their own game.
Once the students have completed their games, each group will share with the total group. Using a rubric the students will rate each game and determine a winner.
Part of learning is being able to share the knowledge. As the students become proficient, they will help younger students who are trying to master the program.
We also encourage parental involvement in our STEM club, and as parents are involved with this, they will be more likely to help provide similar materials at home for their student to use, plus feel confident in helping them with it. When the family is involved, it is more effective.
Our community is needing workers able to code. We want our students to be prepared for these jobs and to develop a passion for STEM careers.
