My Students

"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." (Albert Einstein) I see little miracles in my classroom every day!

I teach children with special needs in a Kindergarten Special Day Class in a school where 100% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.

My students' qualifying conditions range from Autism to Mental Retardation to ADHD and Speech/Language Disorders. Many of my students have emerging speech, some do not talk, and I have one or two who can speak in 2-5 word phrases or simple sentences. Our entire class receives speech services, and our classroom is by nature a language-rich environment where we utilize multiple approaches to language development and learning of math and basic concepts. While my students may have learning handicaps, they still have a desire to learn that is inherent in young children, and they just need the right tools to help them be successful. I have found that my students are motivated to learn by technology that incorporates both audio and visual presentation, and they are especially responsive when they can interact with that technology.

My Project

My students will benefit greatly from the addition of the Apple iPad to our budding classroom technology repertoire. In my view, the iPad holds many possibilities for increasing my students' language and math skills. In addition, the large display and touch screen feature will allow my students with vision and fine motor skills deficits to better interact with technology. My gift card request is so that I may buy apps to load onto the iPads that will provide a variety of ways for my students to learn language, math, and basic concepts, and then submit receipts for reimbursement. Within the app store for the iPad are many apps that are differentiated so that students can work at their own level, and some are even free. One app that I like is iSpeech Toddler Sign (a program with animated children signing). There is also an app called ABA Flash Cards (ABA is often used with children with Autism) that is very engaging and encourages language development as well as concept development.

In order for my students to succeed, they need the tools to allow them to do so.

Technology is so integrated into our society, yet our classroom only has one eMac that is likely older than my students themselves, and its repertoire is three Dr. Seuss stories. With your donations, my students can learn basic required Kindergarten concepts while using current technology that they would otherwise not have the chance to experience. You can make a difference in a special needs child's life!
