This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a self-contained kindergarten and first grade classroom with differently abled students. My students come to me from diverse backgrounds, and with different experiences. Being a public school in New York City, we are lucky to have many cultures and backgrounds within our school. We are a Title I school of about 1000 children.
My kiddos face learning challenges as well as life challenges, and it is my goal and deepest hope that they are in a classroom where they feel cared for, safe, at home, and free to learn.
Kindergarten and first grade are foundational years, and they are all about exploring and learning, becoming readers, writers, and mathematicians. We spend lots of time learning how to be good people and laughing.
My Project
Some of my kiddos are just starting to learn their letters and sounds. The games and resources we are requesting will help them build on these foundational skills. The sight word towers, and literacy games will allow them to recognize and recall high frequency words, and practice putting letters and sounds together to read words.
The skills that they build when playing these games will make them into stronger and more fluent readers.
The games will also allow them to build their communication and social skills through interacting with each other. Having fun while learning to read and building on what they have learned, will create lifelong readers.
