We Can Imagine: Enhancing Imagination in Prekindergarten
My students need cultural dress up costumes, multicultural books, art supplies, and journal supplies in order to further explore their culture.

With an active imagination and materials to help it grow, prekindergarten children can imagine the world. I teach 16 economically disadvantaged prekindergarten children in an urban school district in Michigan. My students are all "at risk" of not succeeding in school, thus they qualify for my class to give them a boost in their education.
Every day, my students are bombarded with media images that may not reflect their home culture. I want to give them ideas and images that can extend their imagination and give them a sense of belonging. Although we do have a classroom library, many of the books in the library are older or not centered around children of my student's culture. My students gain imagination and ideas as they read and learn about students similar to themselves; they need more examples of their culture as they play. Due to the economy in Michigan, many of my children have not experienced in-depth art play or writing experiences; these materials will enable them to draw, create, and journal about their play.
I am requesting several African themed dress up costumes, several books that will help my students understand their culture and other cultures, art supplies, and journal supplies. My students will be able to learn more about their culture through the books, will be able to dress up and pretend through the costumes, and then will be able to draw, paint, and write about these and other experiences.
Your help will make it possible for my students to create stories, plays, drawings, and dreams. With these materials, their creativity and imagination will grow.
