What motivates you? If you are a ten year old kid in a classroom today, I bet technology is on your list! Through the use of electronics like video cameras, we can enhance and motivate students across the curriculum, allowing us to get kids even more excited about and engaged in learning!
We are a co-taught, integrated class in the fifth grade at a public school in Massachusetts.
Our students are smart, creative, hardworking. They have allowed us to establish an environment centered around mutual respect, encouragement, and genuine appreciation for each other. Each of our students have different strengths from academics, to athletics, to performance art, and everywhere in between. Together with the students, we celebrate the things that unite us as a class as well as the differences that make each child special.
Our Class Motto, decided by our students at the start of the year, is "Have Fun and Be Awesome!"
My Project
Recently our students were charged with explaining vocabulary words using an infomercial format. This is something that if videotaped, could take an ordinary vocab lesson and turn it into a fun project where each student could channel their inner infomercial star! Often teachers discuss the importance of providing boys with positive male role models who can inspire them to read among other things. If we had these video cameras, we could videotape fifth graders recommending their favorite books and then show it in the library for younger students to watch and be inspired by. In social studies we are studying the thirteen colonies and early America, we could use the video cameras to create reenactments and bring our curriculum to life. In science we could film experiments and share them among the other fifth grade classes. These are just a few of the many amazing opportunities that can be presented to students with the addition of a video camera in class.
This project could provide students with the opportunity to become even more active participants in the learning process by providing them with motivation and inspiration.
A video camera could make school educational AND fun!
