Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am currently teaching in an urban bilingual school (yes, that means I teach music in English, and in Spanish!). My students range from Kindergarten to 6th Grade. In total, I teach between 400-600 students each year! Our school is very diverse, but many of our students come from difficult situations, which makes going to school unenjoyable for some of them.

My school is unique in that we have a Boys Academy (all-male classes), two sets of bilingual classes (some that are English-dominant, and some that are Spanish-dominant), General Ed, and Special Education classrooms.

Some of my classes are all-female as well, depending on the enrollment of the Boys Academy.

In terms of musical and academic ability, my students are below average, average, and a few are above average. Some of my classes are small (about 17 students) which allows for more one-on-one time, and others (when mixed with special education) may have up 26 students. Having enough materials with that many students makes it difficult to do some of the more interactive lessons.

My Project

In a low income school, we do not have money in the budget for age-appropriate choral music. My older students usually have to either sing primary choral pieces, or the same pieces I purchased out of pocket year after year. Our theme this year is "around the world", and all of this music will be used by both choirs to help them be challenged with meaningful and age-appropriate music.

We also do not have many percussion instruments in our school.

For full composition projects, having at least one Orff xylophone will be a great help, as well as other percussion instruments to help students compose rhythmic pieces they can then perform.

Finally, I have a student with special needs in my African Drumming class, and a full-sized djembe is too much for him. A mini djembe will allow him to participate fully and equally with his peers.
