My students are very young. I am their first school teacher. In most cases, I am the first person outside of family members that the parents entrust their children to. My classroom consists of a very nurturing environment. The parents, children, and I feel like we are a family. All of my students have developmental disabilities and several of them have physical disabilities as well. Most of my students are non-verbal. Due to their very young ages and disabilities, my students currently lack the ability to focus on lessons for long periods of time. To ensure the fact that my students are able to focus on a given activity, most of my lessons are hands-on activities that focus on student-led exploration. My school is in an urban area. 95% of my students come from a single-parent household. 100% of the students in the school receive free lunch. The school is a Title I school as well.
My Project
My students are 3-5 years old with developmental delays. They are eager to learn and brighten my day. Our class uses the We Can Early Learning Curriculum which contains benchmark and unit assessments. Most of my students have limited verbal communication skills and taking assessments can be very frustrating for them.
My students enjoy using technology and are less frustrated when using it to take assessments.
With an IPad Pro, my students would be able to demonstrate their learning by answering questions directly on the iPad through touch. It would make the assessment process less tedious for them. Their results will be scored in the We Can Assessment tool and a graph is then populated to show my students current level of performance as well as student growth. Having this information at my fingertips would mean I would be able to meet each of my students’ individual needs quicker as well as provide their parents with more detailed data about their child’s academic and social development.
