My students need high quality, hands-on science materials, including a microscope, prepared slides, a set of games, safety goggles, and lab kits covering geodes, electricity, magnets and bacteria.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fourth grade in a low SES school in Southern California, that provides very little time and resources for science instruction.
Many of my students come from a very low SES homes. The majority of them are learning to speak English as a second language. As a result, instructional time and supplies are given mostly to Language Arts and Mathematics. Science is a great love of the students and supplies that allow for quick and engaging science lessons are greatly needed.
These supplies will allow for me to cultivate a love of science in the students within the small time frame I am allowed to teach science. Many of the students may be the first in their families to complete college or even high school. There is a serious lack of minorities in the sciences and so I am hoping that creating excitement early on in their educational careers will foster further study.
You will make it possible for my students to have exposure to many science lessons otherwise unavailable to them. They will be able to see the full range of possibilities for their future.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
