Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every morning in my human rights class we begin by chanting om , and then we do a little bit of yoga. We then get to work learning about human rights, the UDHR, upstanders, bystanders, and the importance of speaking truth to power.
My incredible students are all new immigrants to the United States, from all over the world.
They are passionate, intelligent, hard working, gracious, and dedicated to making this world a better place. I admire them, learn from them, and feel inspired by them daily. My school is one of the most diverse in the country full of not only wonderful students, but also dedicated, brilliant educators who truly believe in their work. However, though our population is culturally rich, we are financially challenged, and access to new resources is limited.
My Project
With a class set of "I Am Malala" my students will be able to read Malala Yousafzai's story, the story of a true upstander from one of their countries, who risked her life, spoke truth to power, and is helping to change the lives of young girls. Once we read the book, we will then work to raise money for Malala's organization.
By supporting this project, you will be providing my current and future students with access to a truly remarkable story, about a woman who they can relate to as a current peer.
This very tangible inspiration will help them to see how they can make choices now to improve other's lives. It is my hope, as an educator, that I can help my students see that they have the power to make this world a better place!
