My Project

Compassion and empathy often times, begin in a Kindergarten classroom. It is important to teach kids about compassion and empathy at a young age. They need to learn and practice compassion in order to feel good about themselves and help create a safe and respectful environment for everyone. Through our morning meetings, classroom community is built where children learn that they are a part of the positive and safe classroom environment that all students want to be included in.

To build a compassion-rich classroom, my Kindergarteners and I need the books Shape Stories and Curious Why as well as loose parts, cardboard circles, and art materials to create self portraits as we learn about ourselves, build our classroom community to understand others.

Through sharing the books, perspective and turn taking will occur where children will begin to understand how others feel and see the world through the eyes of others. My goal for our classroom community is always a safe space that is created because mistakes are embraced, confidence is built, and love and gratitude are extended in all situations. Through the use of art materials, children will learn to embrace themselves as they continue to develop empathy for those around them.

These resources will help my students embrace their peers and diversity in our own classroom while extending it beyond our classroom to the larger school community. Through invitations to join us at our morning meetings or other times throughout the day, we will use the materials to create notes of gratitude or encouragement to be shared with our school community and possibly our wider community. We will measure our success by the positive atmosphere in our classroom and the students' ability and willingness to continue sharing and caring for their classmates as well as others in our building.
