My Project

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our scholars have had various school experiences over the last several years: fully in-person learning, hybrid learning, fully-virtual learning, or some combination of all three. They have met challenges with resilience, flexibility, and grace, and though my group of third graders this year has never experienced a 'non-COVID' school year, they are so excited to move up to upper elementary in what they lovingly call the big-kids' hall.

Our classroom is beautifully diverse, and our classroom environment and lessons are designed to celebrate the uniqueness of every scholar in our class.

We recognize that every scholar needs different tools and supports to be successful. My room is an inclusion room, which includes third-grade scholars receiving special education support as well as 'general education' third graders. In addition, I serve scholars with complex medical and emotional needs as well as English language learners.

With this in mind, our classroom has several intentionally-designed supports to meet the unique needs of each scholar. For the last two months, we have been piloting an intensive writing program that has taken our scholars from non-writers to writers who are able to write 1-3 paragraphs on-topic. We would like to start this system right away in August with our new group of third graders, and are excited to see how they will grow as writers!

In order to run an intensive writing block in class every day, I would like to provide my scholars with folders that have pockets for each step of the writing process, in addition to helpful hints and reminders on the folders themselves. These helpful hints will support our scholars who need more scaffolded support with writing. In addition, I would like to provide them with special purple pens for their editing ('Editors have purple pen power!').
