We Are What We Eat!

My students need the Eat to Win Game and other items to teach them the importance of good nutrition and ways to keep themselves healthy.

My Students

We are a small K-5 school filled with students who are wonderful to work with! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, income, gender, and ability levels, all looking for a chance to be successful. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that nudge.

My kids are high energy and I am always searching for ways to keep them engaged while they learn!

Many of them struggle with issues adults couldn't deal with, but still find a way to come to school and participate in the learning process.

We are a family of learners, myself included. Every day is a new day of learning, loving, and respecting each other. We are an awesome community working hard at being the best that we can be!

My Project

We are fortunate enough to have 2 great nutrition programs in our school. One provides fruits and vegetables Monday through Thursday, the other is our school garden. Here's the thing, my students are reluctant to try foods that many of them are not used to seeing on their table. We may enjoy "farm to table", but the students, not so much.

"When you place a artichoke on a plate and ask a student to try it, their initial reaction is "Yuck!".My students asked, "What is it?

Why should I eat it?"

I have explained it to the best of my ability, but imagine nutrition posters that students can view every day. They will play games that provide educational information on nutrition, which works so much better than the sound of a teacher's voice or a worksheet. The hula hoops and beanbags will help them to stay active, even when they are indoors for Recess. Staying healthy involves healthy eating and exercise.

Your donation will make a difference because it will help my students understand why the food provided by the grant and the garden are good for them. This knowledge will carry over to their homes, and hopefully, they will make good choices about what they eat at home, or at least try to influence the choices their parents make.We are what we eat, and my students want to be healthy!
