My students are the forgotten, the ignored, the unfortunate. The school has no library, so the teachers must supply them with books as the neighborhood library is too dangerous to get to on any given day. They come from a neighborhood in Chicago where guns are more common than books; however, they have dreams, big dreams.
They dream of college and careers.
They dream of briefcases and polished shoes. They dream of a savings account and success. My students can be successful, but they have not reached their full potential and won't without a basic necessity: books.
My Project
My students succeed when they not only see themselves in literature, but also when they are allowed to expand beyond what they experience on a daily basis. While they don't have a library or a dance studio or an art workshop, I want to give them that freedom to dream within their books. Because with a book, you take the experience of reading further than the classroom. You take it through your life. My students deserve to know more than what they experience on a daily basis: fear, guns, drugs, racism, poverty. They deserve every bit of dreams as every child in this country does.
