Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students in my classes come from diverse backgrounds and bring multiple abilities to the learning community. This year we are offering a more rigorous course to our Junior class to help prepare them for college level mathematics. Rather than taking Algebra 2, most of our population is taking Algebra 2/Precalculus. The students are rising to the challenge with enthusiasm and a curiosity for learning. By giving most of our students this opportunity, we have created heterogeneous classes full of different knowledge and strengths. The students are always working collaboratively and facilitating their own discussions to resolve mathematical disagreements.
Our students are in the hub of the tech industry, but are lacking the training of skills to be successful in the changing community.
We want students to be able to use technology that will guide their learning and expand their skill set. We often use graphing programs on Chrome-books, videos, and scientific calculators. In the classroom I would like to be able to provide any materials students need so they all have an equal opportunity to learn and be successful.
My Project
We have already received a generous donation that allowed us to buy 25 calculators, but some classes reach up to 35 students. We need to complete our class set so that every student has access to the materials needed to succeed in our class.
We also use a daily agenda board where students can see their assignments for the day and announcements for upcoming events.
This is important for students to understand their expectations in the class. Our boards have been used so much that it is hard to read them even with thorough cleaning. We need replacements to create a learning environment that is organized and clean.
