My Students

I teach in a K-8 school on the east side of Detroit. Our school strives to provide meaningful, engaging instruction for our students including hands-on education. Our school has one of the largest Special Education departments in our area, and we service students with a large variety of special needs.

Students with specials needs often require different resources and opportunities for sensory input and output.

My school is attempting to build a room where we can provide the necessary tools and resources for our students. This room will provide a variety of sensory input and output materials, as well as a safe space for students to come when they are overwhelmed or need a break.

My Project

I teach in a K-8 school in Detroit Public Schools. We have a large Special Needs population in our school, and we run one of the largest Special Education programs in our area.

Students with special needs require more sensory input and output than typically developing students.

My team and I are trying to build a safe, calm, space where our students can go to do just that. With the resources in this project, we will be able to block out florescent lights, create safe ways for students to expel energy, create differentiated seating options, and provide toys and games for students to fiddle with while they try to calm down and deescalate.
