My students need science materials and equipment, such as journals, magnifiers and goggles, that will be used throughout the year to conduct hands on science investigations and explorations!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What is science? What does a scientist do? When asked this question, children describe a scientist as a man wearing a lab coat. This project will help my students realize that they too are scientists by learning about and using science equipment to conduct experiments and investigations all year!
My students are natural born scientists.
They are curious about the world around them and are always asking questions. Our school is small--approx. 350 students, which is not the norm in California, with an amazing and supportive principal. My students are eager to learn--their brains are sponges that absorb any and all information given to them. Everything is a potential investigation/experiment to them so I strive to provide my students with as many learning and project based opportunities as possible to enhance the school curriculum and students' intrinsic motivation to learn more. We are a Title 1 school, but because of our size funding levels are not as high as other schools that have higher enrollments. With the help of parent volunteers and other sources, our school thrives and student achievement is high! We're the best little school in CA! We believe that the future lies in our children, that they have virtually unlimited potential and our job is to enable them to reach it.
My Project
Students will be introduced to Science and the processes of Science by learning about scientists, what scientists do, and the tools they use to conduct experiments. Students will draw what a scientist looks like, analyze their drawings and other pictures and be led to conclude that EVERYONE is a scientist. They will then be given some of the equipment that scientists use to conduct experiments, then be led through a number of hands on activities that teach them to use the science tools. For example, they will collect rocks and observe them with a hand lens, document their findings in their science journals, measure them with rulers and measuring tapes, conduct experiments about questions they may have about rocks using magnets and make personal and classroom rock collections. All these activities are designed to teach students how to think like a scientist and to use the tools that scientists use. Each student will have a science backpack with their own set of science tools.
In order to think and act like a scientist, we need science tools.
This project will provide EVERY student in my class their own set of basic science equipment that they will use all year! They will not have to wait for materials to be available, they can take their science kits home and share what they are learning with their families and they will BE scientists! Parents at my school do not have the financial resources to provide these materials for their children. Help us explore the world!
