This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The population of students that attend my school are mainly high poverty children. Their parents are predominantly low income, and hard working people. Some of my students live only with their mothers and siblings renting a room in a house. My students are enrolled in the Pre-K For All program at the school that I teach in. I have 18, 4-year-old students. I also have a teacher's assistant. My students are very eager to learn. They come in every day with a smile on their face ready to learn.
My Project
I have several students in my class who forget that their hands are not for hitting and they are a bit on the angry/frustrated side. The sensory materials will help them to calm down and to divert their energy to an activity that could help them filter that energy to something else instead of hitting. While they are using the sensory materials, the adults could help them to understand what they did and how we could give them the tools to communicate better with other students instead of hitting others. Teaching them that we are same/different each with their own needs/wants.
I would also like to include toys/dolls that could make my students more aware of diversities.
The guide dog and the special needs block people will help them become aware of diversities. The View From Around The World will also teach about other cultures. The Differing Abilities will help when I teach about the 5 senses and people who might not have one of the senses.
I also included some organizing bins for a math activity for setting tables and counting out "just enough" items for their table set up.
Last, the children might have better communication with each other when they have a few more table toy activities that they could build and play together. This too can help with their social skills and getting to know how they are the same/different through play and conversation.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
