Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our nearly 1,400 students come from a variety of backgrounds, although a majority of our students are Spanish speaking. Providing high quality Spanish and English literature is one way that teachers and librarians are helping students become fluent in English. Reading for pleasure can be a major step toward fluency, not to mention it is one of life's most important skills!
I am happy to say that our students LOVE their library.
It is their sanctuary, and they come in every free chance they get! Our English learning students, our special needs students, and our AP & IB students all intermingle in the library. It is truly the heart of our campus.
In terms of reading, our students love reading new novels and narrative non-fiction and exploring digital resources. A library is a gift that all students deserve!
My Project
Our students love to read---fiction, non-fiction, you name it. Many of our well-loved titles have been read hundreds of times, and they are showing their age or have disappeared altogether. In fact, after weeding hundreds of non-fiction books this year that were from our original 1965 collection date (you read that right!), we are in dire need of new books. For a teacher librarian, there is no greater feeling than when a teenager asks you for a certain title. The list of books I'm asking for here are titles that have been requested, many by students who were not pleasure readers to begin with.
It is an exciting time in young adult literature, and there is a plethora of great new authors out there!
We would love to have this project funded, and I can promise you that these books will enjoy many years of love!
