My Students

Welcome to our room! We are self-reliant learners who, in the words of Mr. Rogers, expect and accept mistakes every day. Our class represents the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. Thirty percent of my students are English learners, and just under half qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our school consists of a student population that is 20% Latino, 40% white, 15% African-American, 10% Asian, and 15% students who self-identify as multi-ethnic.

In my classroom, I make a commitment to each family that their child's needs will be meet, as an individual, to the best of my ability.

"Individualized" and "child-centered" learning have become buzzwords in education, but for me, treating each child as an individual is truly the cornerstone of my practice. I know that what happens to a child outside of my classroom is just as important and influential as what happens within it. As such, I strive to create a learning space that honors who my students are at home, in their own communities, and in the school community.

My Project

All classrooms need and deserve to have their own classroom library, and creating one is no easy feat. It's expensive and time-consuming, but critically important. As I take over a first grade classroom from fourth grade, I need to provide my students with leveled texts that are high-interest and promote a love of reading. I can't do this with the books I currently own, as most are beyond the level of my firsties. That's where you come in!

First grade is a year of unprecedented growth in children's ability to read and develop their identities as readers, but I simply won't be able to give my students the literacy instruction they need without a first grade-specific classroom library.

Such a library needs both fiction and nonfiction texts, per Common Core standards, and needs books kids will actually want to read. The set of 242 books I'm hoping to receive through this project include both genres, as well as favorites like "Goodnight, Moon" and the Elephant & Piggie series. Books will be organized by genre and level so students can easily and independently access texts that are "just right" for them. Thanks so much for considering my project!
