We Are Readers And Writers

My students need a place to write their amazing and creative thoughts and a place to organize the big books they love to read.

My Students

When the school year began, my first-graders knew between 1 and 20 sight words. They had a hard time stringing together a sentence. Now, they know between 100 and 400 sight words and we write seven-sentence paragraphs. Help us keep the learning going!

Nearly 90 percent of the students at our kindergarten through 5th-grade elementary school qualify for free or reduced-price lunches and we have a diverse student body of about 400 students.

We also have high expectations for our students. We begin our discussion of college or career training in kindergarten and they are excited about the possibilities that lie before them. We hold parent nights as a school and in individual classrooms to build partnerships with parents.

My Project

When students enter my classroom, I tell them they are readers and writers. Some are ready to believe it on day 1; others look at me quizzically. All of them come to believe it -- even the ones that didn't think they could do it. Their smiles when they realize they read a book all by themselves is why I come to work every day. Having a book rack to hold my big books will allow the students even more opportunities to be readers. They love the books that are nearly bigger than them and they love to share them with friends. A rack means the books are accessible and not in the bottom of a bookshelf. During our writing process time, I get a chance to work with each child on their need whether it be remembering capital letters at the beginning of a sentence or adding colorful adjectives. Writing journals give my students a place of their own to put their thoughts and stories. Their pride in their writing increases when they have a notebook of their own.

Reading and writing are foundations for what is to come for these amazing students.
