My students need pencils, colors, binders, pencil sharpeners, color pencils, erasers, composition notebooks, notebook paper, 5pk dividers, pencil pouches, highlighters, red marking pens, and any other basic daily school supplies.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Honestly, I haven't met my students yet, but I know my scholars are Houston survivors of TS Harvey and they need help now more than ever. Our school is a Title 1 school which means that the majority of our students come from low income households. I've worked at this school for 5 years now, and no matter their circumstances, our students are warriors. They push through.
I do not have a photo of them to show you because our first day of school was pushed back an entire week.
As we have been locked in the last couple of days I have read about their demographics, test results, and have tried to learn as much as I can about them as possible. The last couple of days have been traumatic for us. Help me help them come back with enthusiasm and not feel worried about adding financial burdens to their parents.
My Project
Your donations will help students come back to school with less stress and anxiety after a traumatic experience with TS Harvey. Our students have parents that live paycheck to paycheck and now with this horrific experience many families have lost their homes, food, cars, lost days of work, and income. Some of these parents have to worry about putting in work hours, finding a new vehicle, putting a roof over their heads, and food on the table. Some of our students that were ready to start school might have lost fresh school supplies, backpacks, shoes, and uniforms in the floods.
I was personally a victim of floods as a middle schooler and it was devastating to see my parents go through the desperation of losing everything they had worked hard for.
I watched my mother cry. I helped her and my father salvage furniture. My little sister and I spent an entire day at the laundromat with my mother as she washed our sheets, blankets, and clothes that had sulked in flood waters.
This request for your aid is one that will help innocent children. As we rebuild as a city, let this be one less thing for our scholars to worry about.
