Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of my students will be the first in their families to graduate high school and the first to attend (and graduate) college. They are predominately Latino and live in socio-economically challenged neighborhoods.
Moreover, they are smart, motivated, and hilarious.
They make time in class fly by. In fact, time with my students doesn't feel like work. It feels like being at a BBQ with family. We do a lot of laughing and still manage to learn. In other words, my students make class feel like home.
My Project
My students will use Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" to explore themes involving morality, culture, family, and the unfairness of life, especially for poor people and people of color, something my students understand full well.
Also, this project will provide students to one of the greatest lessons of life: to stand up for what's right even in the face of adversity and outright hopelessness.
If we want our world to improve, the youth must understand this lesson, for someday the world will be in their hands. As of now, those who wield power do so for the betterment of the rich. We need the next generation of leaders to be selfless and willing to fight the good fight.
