This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifty kindergarteners are in the Extended Foreign Language Spanish program at an elementary school in a low-income area in the heart of Miami, Florida. Ninety-eight percent of the students are Hispanic and more than eighty percent are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Despite their economic challenges, these fun-loving, five and six year olds are at that wonderful stage where they are eager to learn and are inquisitive.

My students are active, hands-on kids who love to learn through experience.

My Project

Students will use the index cards to write down their sight words! I will use a method by Orton Gillingham that will allow students to learn their sight words by writing the word on an index card on top of a screen. Then, the students will trace the word and recite it. Once the children have gone through the process, they will need a safe place to keep the index cards during the school year, so that they do not get lost. The students will use the cases to keep the sight words and secure and keep them in a safe place at home.

The case holders will give importance to the sight words and give the students a sense of responsibility.
