This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children can benefit most from technology when it is used to develop higher order thinking skills, promote creativity, and aid academic learning. However, it is very difficult to provide students with these benefits when there is a lack of technology in the class or at home.

My 2nd and 3rd grade students come from a wide range of backgrounds that include families of low socioeconomic status, those who are educated, and professional families.

Some of my students have witnessed drive-by shootings and we have families that struggle daily to make ends meet. Despite circumstantial disadvantages, these students are very eager and motivated to learn and succeed. They appreciate anything we provide which they thankfully embrace. Our classroom currently consists of one outdated desktop with one outdated monitors.

My Project

Currently, a student gets to use a computer once per day during small group reading instruction. The remaining 23 students patiently wait until it is their turn to use it. With a new iPad more students will have an opportunity to work with technology every day, I can provide them with apps and websites which will guide them with extra support in both math and language arts. They will also have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the technology so that they will be prepared to use it for the standardized test coming soon. Since the beginning of the 2014 school year, close to 70% of our students have progressed from a Kinder Reading Level to a First Grade Reading Level. They have been able to do so under the above stated conditions. It is our belief that an additional 20%-40% of these students will improve to current grade levels with these classroom upgrades.

If we receive an iPad, my students will become more engaged in learning and will have fun doing so.

I believe that this entertaining learning environment will help each child to focus more on tasks. It is important that we give our students the tools and resources so as to offer an optimal chance for them to build better futures for for themselves, their families, as well as for their communities. Never in history has it been more important!
