My Students
What do you do when you come across a word that you do not understand? Well you would look it up right? My students would if they knew how to and with a class set of dictionaries they all will will learn.
I teach a wonderful group of Fourth graders at a rural, Title I elementary school.
More than 50 percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch. My classroom is one that is diverse in learning styles, cultures, and interests. It is the varied backgrounds of my students that evokes wonderful classroom discussions and allows my students to learn from their peers perspectives respectfully.
My Project
With a dictionary, my students can look up meanings of words that they do not know while they are reading, search for synonyms for words that they already know, and check their own spelling as they write independently. My students will also have hands-on practice of how to use reference tools.
With a dictionary, my students will be that much more prepared to be independent readers, writers, and thinkers.
Without the dictionaries in class, they have not been able to even learn the skill of using the dictionary. Once we attain dictionaries, not only will they learn how to use one, but they will be prompted to use one in everyday tasks to enhance their overall education.
