We Are In A Play!! (Or Would Love To See One!)

My students need an introduction to the performing arts by seeing a live theatre show, with bus transportation to and from the school.

My Students

"Yay! Elephant and Piggie!" is the general response to the suggestion of what to read during story time. These eager preschool and kindergarteners are always ready to listen to a Mo Willems book.

We are one of only three Montessori schools in the Chicago Public School System and the only one in a high poverty neighborhood.

These are mixed age classrooms, with ages from 3 to 6 years old, and it is often difficult to find reading material that will engage all the kids. Mo Willems is one of those gifted authors who all the kids love, and the Elephant and Piggie series is one of their favorites.

My Project

The Apollo Theater's wonderful production of Elephant and Piggie's "We are in a Play!" is the perfect introduction to the performing arts for my students. Since many of the children are already familiar with the Elephant and Piggie books, they will be especially delighted to experience this new interpretation as live musical theater. They will see how books can be adapted into different mediums, understand the differences between simply reading something and acting it out, learn how costumes and props can enhance their experience, and hear great songs and music performed in front of them. Plus, they will be able to ask questions and interact with the actors after the performance. They will certainly enjoy reading the books even more after seeing it live!

So many of our kids may never get a chance to experience live theater and this play is one I know they will enjoy and remember.

They will always be able to read the Elephant and Piggie books in our school and classroom libraries and remember the time they saw it live! The experience of seeing their favorite characters come to life is one my students will never forget.
